Edmund Whitman to Ledyard Hale Letter, July 30, 1898

Attorney Edmund Whitman replies at length to District Attorney Ledyard Hale on the Beta Beta chapter charter case. Whitman details Grand President Bertha Richmond's actions, that she has referred the matter to her attorney, A.C. Burnham. In court testimony, Richmond blamed Grand Secretary Carla Sargent. During the June 29, 1898 proceedings, the annexation of the fraternity constitution to the legal bill was objected to. (The secrecy of the fraternity constitution later becomes an issue.) Note the letter is dated July 30, yet pertains to late June.
