Biography

Janet Gerhauser Carpenter was an American pairs figure skater. With her partner, John Nightingale, Carpenter twice won the silver medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic Team. She also competed in fours with Nightingale, Marilyn Thomsen, and Marlyn Thomsen and won the 1949 North American Title. After her skating career, Carpenter served as a manager, coach, and judge for U.S. Figure Skating. Serving as manager of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team and as a judge during the 1988 Olympics, Carpenter became the first American to skate, manage, and judge in the Olympics.

Carpenter was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2008.
