Jean Nelson Penfield did not have any Council experience when she was elected Grand President in 1900, but she was chosen for her devotion to Fraternity history, development, ideals, and purpose, and incredible speaking ability. During her leadership, Kappa displayed great civil and social interest. In her spare time, Jean was an impressive and successful suffragist, attorney, parliamentarian, songwriter, and poet. She is nationally recognized for her role in the founding the League of Women Voters in western states.
