Chapter Record for 1885-86: Beta - St. Lawrence University

[Beta] Beta has 14 active members, 5 seniors, and 7 initiates from this year. St. Lawrence University has 65 students and 4 fraternities. First term literary work included the study of Wagner and teachers and teacher's methods while second term literary work included the study and practice on speeches, and the study of cities and provinces in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.

Initially, the fraternity custom was to name a new chapter after a closed one, so that all 24 letters of the Greek alphabet were always in use. This practice ended in 1890 when Convention delegates voted to affix Beta to the name of a chapter to indicate it was the second and to affix Gamma on the second round, then Delta, and so on. The chapter at the St. Lawrence was the second chapter to be known as Beta and, after 1890, it became known as Beta Beta.
