This essay describes the "radical wrong[ness]" of over-dependence upon chapter and fraternity for self-definition, particularly for women. The author writes that for many a woman, "the condition of partial servitude, in which she was held by the old theory . . . has left its mark on her that ages will scarcely suffice to remove it," History shows that from bondage and superstition come feelings of insufficiency and dependence which can only be overcome by moral and intellectual freedom. The author encourages women to free themselves.
