The author describes German societies, which are similar to American fraternities except that the practices often include excessive drinking of beer. The author adds that dueling is not uncommon, nor are duel-related deaths. Germans live a "charmed life" because they need not work their way though schools, and women are often not instructed in the same courses as men such as Greek, Latin, and higher learning.
