St. Clair McKelway, the Regent of the University of the State of New York (a licensing and accreditation body for the state) and Editor of The Brooklyn Eagle, publishes a letter he wrote to Grand President Bertha Richmond. McKelway is an honorary alumnus of St. Lawrence University, and as the Regent, can speak to its standards. He insinuates that she has affronted the entire state university system by stating in a letter that the standard of St. Lawrence University is unquestionably low. This letter became known as the McKelway letter, and is also available in a Beta Beta chapter pamphlet in the collection.
