In 1914, William Stewart traveled from San Francisco to Tahiti, Cooks Island, and New Zealand. He describes the month he spent in New Zealand, with particular attention to the beautiful landscape and local exports. He also writes about the government funded railroad and how pleasant it was to ride. One paragraph describes the Waitomo Caves, where he saw glow worms for the first time. The end of the letter compares the natives of New Zealand with the natives of Hawaii, as that is where they were said to have come from.
