The Key prints the full text of an address delivered before the National Convention of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity on August 26, 1886 by Mary B. Jewett of Lambda Chapter. In the address, the author begins with a history of education and claims that education has become less abstract and more concerned with the "animal, vegetable, and mineral" in the present day. Jewett then traces the history of greek letter fraternities in American universities. She celebrates women for being the backbone of all great movements of education and philanthropy, and proclaims, "in no other age of the world's history has the position of a woman been so exalted, her opportunities so wide." She goes on to trace a history of women in literature, and of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity. Finally, she concludes that Kappa powerfully promotes the grand tradition of female empowerment through education.
