This article describes the history of American college Greek letter organizations as growing out of the opportunity for higher education, emphasis on friendship, and the inspiration of classical Greece. Greek symbolism is a fundamental part of Kappa history. The Greek goddess Athena is especially significant to women's fraternities and sororities as she represents wisdom and female leadership.
