Mary D. Lyons received an $1,000 Kappa Graduate Scholarship given by the Kansas City, Missouri Alumnae Association. Lyons has been working with students who whose high school grades and test scores are too low for university. She aims to study at the University of Texas at Austin to increase her skills as a teacher of educationally disadvantaged students. She holds a series of leadership positions in educational boards and programs for the advancement of disadvantaged students.
